José leads the tax and international investment practice of the firm focusing on transactions with international issues and with Portuguese-speaking countries and is fluent in Portuguese and English. José is a full member of the Portuguese Bar Association, Portuguese Fiscal Association (AFP) and International Fiscal Association (IFA) and has already been recognized as a leading practitioner in Portugal by International Tax Review.

José holds a law degree from the University of Lisbon (2006) and several post-graduation degrees on tax law as well as an Adv. LL.m. in International Taxation from the International Tax Center (Leiden University). José worked as an associate at RFF & Advogados and as a tax expert for McKinsey & Company

José Calejo Guerra is the founding partner of the firm and leads the tax and investment practice with over 14 years experience in the tax field, combining a very strong academic background (law degree with tax specialization, double post grad in tax law and in tax planning and Adv LL.M. in international tax) in some of the most important tax universities and a unique work experience (combining working for tier 1 law firms in Portugal, with consulting experience at McKinsey & Company. José was also a teaching assistant on International Tax at the ITC – Leiden University and is occasionally invited to teach and speak in Portugal (relevant seminars include the coordination of the energy tax law module for the post-graduation run by Universidade Católica and a module on M&A transactions in a course taught by IDEFF / Universidade de Lisboa) and abroad (relevant seminars include Brazil on international tax aspects with Rio de Janeiro’s IBMEC, Angola on VAT with the Ministry of Industry and Kazakhstan on a private clients event).

In addition to his activity as a tax advisor, José also acts as an arbitrator for the Portuguese Tax Arbitration Center (CAAD) in different cases.

José has a track record on advising domestic and international clients, dealing with the tax implications of their operations and supporting such clients with complying with their tax obligations. He has been also very involved in dealing with private clients and SME’s in the jurisdictions covered by the firm.
