Pinsent Masons has taken on a senior legal counsel from BP, boosting its City litigation practice.

John Gilbert, who specialises in international arbitration and energy disputes, joins Pinsent Masons in London as a partner from BP, where he had been a senior legal counsel for over five years. Before that, Gilbert spent seven years as a lawyer at legacy firm Herbert Smith..

Pinsent Masons has also hired a construction disputes specialist in its Paris office. Frédéric Gillion - another arbitration expert - joins Pinsent Masons as a partner from Fenwick Elliott, where he was also a partner. Gillion is the first lateral hire than Pinsent Masons has made since launching its office in Paris in September 2012.

In a statement, Pinsent Masons’ head of litigation and compliance James Bullock said: “Pinsent Masons is a force to be reckoned with in all aspects of dispute resolution and these appointments demonstrate our commitment to growth and expansion in key specialist areas of which energy and international arbitration are crucial. The addition of John and Frédéric really puts us on the map in these key areas.”
