The Lawyer Network is delighted to announce that Luis Alberto Aziz Checa of 'SAI Law & Economics' has joined the Lawyer Network. Luis has joined the Lawyer Network as our exclusive M&A Law member in Mexico.

His areas of expertise are cross-border counseling, mergers & acquisitions, arbitration and competition.

Advises Mexican and multinational companies in the design and negotiation of diverse commercial transactions, including private equity transactions. He specializes in complex cross-border mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. Moreover, in his practice he has developed a substantial expertise in representing minority stock holders in corporate conflicts, including intricate buy-sell procedures.

In the arbitration filed, he has been selected by Chambers as one of the top arbitrators in Mexico. He has been involved in several domestic and international arbitrations as party counsel and as member of the arbitral tribunal. He was part of the Mexican Government NAFTA negotiating team in the dispute resolution group. Founding member of the Mexican Arbitration Center (CAM) and member of its General Council which approves all awards rendered.

In competition issues he has advised companies in the notification of global and national mergers, in the complaint of antitrust practices, and the defense of such companies on investigations launched for alleged antitrust practices in several sectors such as soft drinks, beer, cement, hotels etc.. Lead the legal team in SAI whose purpose was to render antitrust reports to the Federal Competition Commission on the practices of the two leading airlines in Mexico. He has been selected by Chambers and Who’s Who Legal as one of the top lawyers in this field in Mexico and as the recommended lawyer for Mexico by Global Law Experts.

He currently serves in several US and Mexican corporate boards: NAFTA Fund of Mexico L.P., Road 9 Inc., Regional Market Makers Inc., Grupo Editorial Armonia and Baskin Robbins Mexico.

He teaches arbitration and competition courses at the UNAM, the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), the Instituto Teconológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (TEC), the Universidad Iberoamericana and the Universidad Panamericana.

Co-author of several editions of the Mexican chapter in the Getting the Deal Through- Dominance publication and co-author of the Mexican chapter in Getting the Deal Through- Private Equity publication.

He received his law degree with honors from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He earned with honors an LLM in International Law from Georgetown University and a Masters degree in European Community Law from the Collège d' Europe in Brugges, Belgium.

As part of his pro bono work, he is the President of the Board of Juconi (Together with Children) a civil service organization dedicated to providing effective solutions for street children in Mexico.

Spanish is his native tongue and he speaks and writes English fluently
