US healthcare law approved by Supreme Court

Published: Monday, July 2, 2012

Key parts of the US healthcare law have been approved by the US Supreme Court, signaling a victory for President Obama and one which will have a significant impact on the US healthcare industry.

The reforms look to begin the foundation of state-based insurance exchanges over the next two years and cover 30 million people with medical insurance.

Commenting on the ruling, Obama said: “Whatever the politics, today’s decision was a victory for people all over this country whose lives will be more secure because of this law and the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold it.”

However, not everyone has shared the President’s enthusiasm, with the law being branded a ‘job killer’ by Republican presidential contender, Mitt Romney.
