Announcement - New member of the Lawyer Network in England

The Lawyer Network is delighted to announce that David Clifton of Joelson Wilson LLP has joined the Lawyer Network. David has joined the Lawyer Network as our exclusive Gaming and Licensing member in England

David trained with Joelson Wilson, having joined the firm in 1979. He became a partner in 1983, heading up the firm’s Litigation Team before setting up the specialist Licensing/Gambling Team in the early 1990s, which is now widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading practices in this area of the law, consistently top-ranked in The Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners Guide to the UK Legal Profession and praised for its “proactive and strategic approach”. It has been described as “greatly knowledgeable and utterly dependable in fighting its clients’ battles” and, most recently, as a “value for money practice providing an excellent level of service”.

David specialises in all aspects of betting, gaming & lotteries law, both land-based and online/remote – together with associated regulatory and compliance issues – plus alcohol, entertainment and large event licensing, including live music festivals.

He acts for a range of leading national & international public companies as well as newcomers to the gambling and leisure industries. He has advised two of the leading trade organisations in the leisure field which has resulted in involvement in the drafting of national licensing legislation and membership of working parties on licensing & gambling law reform. His clients include leaders in the casino, bingo, betting, spread betting, remote gambling, gaming machine, pub/bar, hotel, restaurant and nightclub fields.

David is a contributing editor to Smith & Monkcom, ‘Law of Betting Gaming & Lotteries’ and ‘Law of Gambling’, ‘Halsbury’s Laws of England: Betting, Gaming and Lotteries’ edition and Kolvin’s ‘Licensed Premises: Law and Practice’. He regularly chairs/speaks at seminars and conferences in the UK and abroad.

He is himself top-ranked in Chambers & Partners Guide to the Legal Profession, where he has been described as having a “meticulous eye for detail” and being “fantastically dedicated and client-oriented”, “hugely knowledgeable and skilled” and “a genuine expert in the field & an impressive advocate”. He has also been “singled out for his advocacy skills; he is, according to one barrister, ‘exceptionally well-prepared for court – the best licensing lawyer I have come across’”.
