Announcement - New member of the Lawyer Network in Australia

The Lawyer Network is delighted to announce that Colin Loveday of 'Clayton Utz' has joined the Lawyer Network. Colin has joined the Lawyer Network as our exclusive Product Liability member in Australia.

Colin Loveday is internationally recognised as an experienced litigation lawyer specialising in the defence of class actions, complex commercial litigation and product liability claims. He is one of the leaders of the Clayton Utz Class Actions team and head of the national Product Liability group.

Colin has been continuously involved in the development of Australian classaction practice and procedure for over 20 years. He has defended some of Australia's most high-profile class actions involving complex consumer product and financial services claims. He has worked extensively with lawyers in other jurisdictions in the co-ordinated defence of multinational claims, developing international defence strategies and working with international expert witnesses. He also advises corporations and financial institutions on securities class actions and in regulatory investigations and inquiries.

Colin also has a broad experience advising manufacturing and pharmaceutical clients on regulatory requirements, labelling and advertising issues, product recalls and hazard alerts.

Experience

Representing a global pharmaceutical manufacturer and its local subsidiary in the defence of class action proceedings involving claims by hundreds of group members who allege they have suffered cardiovascular injuries caused by their consumption of our client's drug.

Acted in the successful defence of G D Searle & Co (now merged with Pfizer Inc) and Monsanto Corporation in the Australian proceedings involving the Gravigard (Copper 7) intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD). This quasi-class action was described by the trial judge in his judgment as "the longest running and most complex product liability action yet heard in Australia".

Represented the Sydney Water Corporation in connection with contamination issues which affected the Sydney water supply during the latter half of 1998 and the two class actions which were subsequently commenced in the Federal Court of Australia.

Acted in the successful defence of the Australian Fen-Phen class action litigation.

Acted in the defence and subsequent resolution of the class actions that were brought against St Jude Medical Inc in relation to implantable cardiac pacemakers.

Advised a major food manufacturer in relation to the potential exposure of employees to electromagnetic emissions. This matter involved working with expert witnesses who carried out their own tests/analyses and a historical comparison of previous tests.

Advised a government department in relation to the legal issues arising from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the screening/testing of blood from donors.
